The Calculation of Energy Consumption during Production of Anhydrous Alcohol from Grain.
Nowadays the significance of fermenting spirit utilization is increasing in nonfood branches, particularly as admixtures into propellants. For the assessment of advantage of such an application is necessary to compare energy demands of spirit production with energy developed by its combustion in an ignition engine. During tests carried out with the utilization so called cold non-pressure procedure in school alcohol distillery in Hohenheim (BRD) research workers succeeded in achieving the consumption 7,58 MJ per 1 liter ethanol. Comparing with heat of combustion of 1 liter ethanol, the gain of energy was enumerated to 21,20 MJ. This balance is in a discrepancy with a line of published information, which consider such an utilization of fermenting spirit as disadvantageous from the viewpoint of energy or report at least higher values of energy consumption than those obtained during tests described by author.
